Join Steam Incorporated and the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of FRONZ with an extravagant line up of experiences throughout Matariki Weekend!
The Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand has long supported and advocated for the work that we, and many other organisations undertake, helping to ensure the sustainable operation and preservation of New Zealand’s rail heritage.
What to expect:
Utilising a collection of 100 year old open balcony carriages, immerse yourselves in the heritage aspects of carriages that once plied this very route, day in, day out.
After a fast run from Palmerston North to Marton, the pace slows as we hang a left, onto the Marton – New Plymouth route. A line that only sees freight trains these days, the undulating terrain shows itself as we head through a trio of tunnels, varying in length before dropping down into Whanganui. Once a hive of rail activity, we pass through Eastown on the outskirts of town before crossing the Whanganui River and heading down the Whanganui Branch towards town.
Once arrived at Taupo Quay, you will be taken by bus through to Whanganui's Riverboat Centre. It is among one of the first architecturally designed rowing centres in New Zealand. You can still see the original W.R.C wooden letters, short for Wanganui Rowing Club, above the front door at the entrance to the building and has since gained a New Zealand Heritage Plaque acknowledging its historical significance.
The building was restored by community volunteers and turned into a wonderful workshop for the restoration of the Paddle Steamer Waimarie in the late 90s and later became the Riverboat Centre and Riverboat Museum.
Through the course of two sittings you'll be able to sit down and enjoy a fantastic buffet meal, on the edge of the water. Located within the venue, will be a cash bar with alcohol available to purchase, as well as an insightful look at the history of Whanganui's riverboats and how they shaped the community.
